Leslie Stubbs:
Medium: Oils and Ceramics

Artist’s Statement for Leslie Stubbs
Leslie Stubbs was born in Vancouver and has lived on Bowen Island since 1988. She has been creative all her life, falling in love with photography at a very early age. Painting, writing, dancing, and doing clay work, are some of her other creative passions. Before retiring on our beautiful island, Leslie commuted to the mainland for her work in the communications industry.
The beauty of the natural landscape has inspired Leslie to paint to make cards from her photos to share this beauty with everyone. She has sold her landscape, nature (don’t forget the dahlias!) and view photo cards out of Cates Pharmacy and other locations since 2009.
For the Here’s Bowen Art Tour show Leslie will display several of her original oil paintings for the first time and have prints and cards of these for sale. Photo cards featuring Bowen Island and surrounding views will be included, along with her classic dahlia cards and prints of favorite card images. Some clay pieces reflecting our beautiful surroundings will also be on display.
Leslie lives with her husband, corgi and little white cat in her home with a stunning view of Queen Charlotte Channel and Howe Sound.

I grew up in England. Studied Art at High School for my GCE exams.
I had a career teaching young children – preschool to Kindergarten – where I encouraged young children to explore art mediums.
Retired to Bowen 2000.
You will very often see paths or trails in my work which are for me a strongly symbolic of the choices we make in life.
When I retired from teaching I decided it was time to walk down the path towards becoming an artist – something I had at the back of my mind since my teen years.
My initial steps on this path took me to Montague where during more than one session with Paul Deggan I came to see many colours in the world around us.
Probably more than Paul would ever have imagined.
I now call myself a colourist.
I have had many mentors on my journey and have taken many workshops with artists that I admire.
But I have also been influenced by Emily Carr and Van Gogh who has inspired me to portray the movement and energy that surrounds us.
For me forests are magical places but they are not static – they vibrate with energy and movement.
I try to portray that movement in my trees.
I have attended numerous art workshops, including Capilano College’s 2003 Art Course in France.
I have also studied under Marilyn Lemon, Paul Deggan, Greta Guzek, Mike Svob, Lucy Collins, Dene Croft, Marlene Lowden and Nicholas Pearce.
I have taught three five day art workshops in Washington State at the Eliot Institute Creative camp.
I have also taught a number of small workshops in my home studio.

I was born and raised in South Africa, and return as often as I can to spend time in the national parks and conservancies of Southern Africa. My relationship with nature broadened since moving to Canada and living the West Coast. My wildlife paintings reflect the ties I have with both lands.
I enjoy observing birds and animals in their natural environment. Through sketching, taking notes and photos, the experiential information I collect is a valuable reference for my paintings. It’s gratifying to bring together my love of painting and wildlife.
Painting helps me process and remember moments of emotional connection, each one as unique as the animal and un-repeatable. I invite you to have your own encounter as you meet the animals in my paintings.
