Miki's artistic practice is a story of authenticity and exploration, fueled by determined work, hands on tools, and eyes on the flame. Her formative 20 years in the ever-shifting metropolis of New York City, blending with her origins on Japan's tranquil Izu Peninsula and journeys in Canada, have shaped her craft and perspectives. It is within this contrasting tapestry of experiences that Miki's
sensitivity to pattern, texture, material, and the energy of her surroundings coalesce, defining her playful style.
In 2017, Miki embarked on a new chapter on Bowen Island, BC, establishing a studio and gallery that became a crucible for her creativity. This transition from the vibrant energy of NYC to the pristine beauty of Bowen Island broadened her mind, allowing her art to flourish in new and unexpected ways, more than ever enabling her commitment to a direct, hands-on creation process and practicing the balance between the liberating aspects of drawing and painting and the careful exactness of metalwork, enriching both. Her creations, distinguished by subtly layered metalwork and an acute sensitivity to the esthetics of her materials and the insights that only come from repetitive labor, narrate her life's work. They interlace moments of her life experiences with a continuous pursuit of craftsmanship and beauty.
From her studio on Bowen Island, Miki draws upon the world, people, and relationships around her, transforming observation and inspiration into art that is fortified with poetic energy and tactile sensitivity. Her story is one of continuous exploration, growth, self-awareness, and the embodiment of art as a real expression of life’s wonder.
