“My love for woodturning is an extension of my passion for nature. The finished piece is already somewhere inside the log when I put it on my lathe. In some ways, I am just an instrument that reveals what’s been created organically and nature is the true artist. This brings with it a great sense of respect and responsibility. In wood turning, there are no do-overs. Though the pieces I work on are often spinning close to a thousand revolutions per minute, it’s here where I am most comfortable. The speed, and the stability it affords, is what allows me to take my time. To slowly refine the shape as the grains reveal themselves to me.
In 2025, I am excited to continue turning a variety of locally sourced woods. Each species offers its own set of challenges and rewards. Every tree has a story and I would never be able to choose a favorite among them.”
Bean Benson lives full time on Bowen Island with her husband, two teenage children and rescue Saint Bernard cross named Moonbow.
