My love for woodturning is an extension of my passion for nature. The finished piece is already somewhere inside the log when I put it on my lathe. In some ways, I am just an instrument that reveals what’s been created organically, and nature is the true artist. This brings with it a great sense of respect and responsibility. In wood turning, there are no do-overs. Though the pieces I work on are often spinning close to a thousand revolutions per minute, it’s here that I am most comfortable. The speed and the stability it affords allow me to take my time to slowly refine the shape as the grains reveal themselves to me.
In 2026, I am excited to continue turning a variety of locally sourced woods. Each species offers its own set of challenges and rewards. Every tree has a story and I would never be able to choose a favourite among them.”
Bean Benson lives full time on Bowen Island with her husband, two teenage children and large rescue pups named Moonbow and Halo.
