Jens Diercks was born in West Germany and trained as an artist in Vancouver. He produces wall sculptures of the discarded refuse that surrounds him and all of us. Junked stepladders and pianos, suitcases, books and chairs are the objects of everyday use that he transforms.
In a process he calls Function Destruction, he compresses the three-dimensional object into a shallow relief, a visual skeleton, while revisioning the shapes indispensable to the object’s identity and adding colour and texture to bring out its distilled essence.
In the resulting wall reliefs, the deconstructed/reconstructed item and our mental picture of what the item should look like, combine to double the energy and presence of these strong and original sculptures.
